Challenges of Security in South Asia – Hope for the Future
Mr. Jauhar Saleem, Ambassador of Pakistan to Germany, delivered a lecture on the “Challenges of Security in South Asia – Hope for the Future” at the Institute of South Asian Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin, to mark Kashmir Solidarity Day. The lecture attended by a large number of students, faculty members, journalists and government officials focused on the overall security situation in South Asia and road map for peace and stability in the region.
Ambassador Jauhar Saleem made a special reference to the unresolved Kashmir dispute and presence of 700,000 Indian troops in the valley, being a constant source of tension between the two neighbors. Emphasizing the centrality of Kashmir dispute for peace in South Asia, he added that the two countries had already fought three wars over the disputed valley. The ensuing arms race in the region in the face of extreme poverty, illiteracy, natural disasters and food insecurity posed another serious challenge to lasting peace in South Asia. He also dilated upon the fragile peace in Afghanistan, in spite of more than a decade-long presence of International security forces in that country. Talking about the way forward, he spoke at length about Pakistan’s initiative of a peaceful neighborhood, with specific focus on Heart of Asia Conference, quadrilateral group meeting, efforts to resume dialogue with India, enhancing regional economic and infrastructural connectivity through CPEC, KASA-1000 and TAPI. He observed that Pakistan’s National Action Plan was aimed at eradicating extremism not only to ensure its own security, but also to ensure peace and stability of the region and the world.
The talk was followed by question-answer session, mostly centered on Pakistan-India relations.
The South Asian Institute of Humboldt University established in 19th century, has a broad academic profile, with wide range of disciplines including South Asian languages, literature, history, geography and philosophy. It has long served as one of the first stops for Pakistani Ambassadors on their arrival in Berlin. Through arranging this lecture, the Embassy of Pakistan revived this traditional link with the Institute.
